GOD CARES

I broke the cream-colored, red polka-dotted spoon rest on top of my stove. I had used it for years, so I knew it would be hard to replace. I looked at several, but they did not resonate with my spirit. I decided to wait until I found the right one, because I hate to settle for anything. Patience has been a wonderful teacher in my life.

My husband and I were leaving a shopping center a few weeks later, and a strong feeling came over me to go to the Goodwill. He hates that store, so he was ready to argue with me about going inside. When I told him that I felt like a spoon rest would be in there, he parked the car.

Our Goodwill is not a large one. I slowly walked down the aisles, while my husband went ahead and quickly searched the store. He returned, ready to leave, and said, “There aren’t any spoon rests in here.”

I just smiled and held up the one I had in my buggy. He looked surprised and then he grinned. “How did I miss that?”

“Well, when you’re searching for treasure, it’s best to go at a slow pace,” I said. “This beauty was on the end of an aisle.” I raised my eyebrows. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to check the other aisles?”

He grunted, pulled out his phone, and went looking for a chair to sit on. I added an intricate wire basket to my buggy and accelerated my steps. There were no more treasures to be found, so we left. As I walked to the car, grinning up at my husband, I was thanking God for caring about the insignificant things that matter to me.

Dear Readers, this is what a relationship with God looks like. You don’t have to be perfect to have one. A believer’s personal pleasure may not be the Lord’s top priority, but I am a witness that He cares about anything that His child cares about. The spoon rest even matches my stove top, not to mention it has one of my favorite wildflowers on it. Texans love bluebonnets.

“Delight yourself also in the LORD; and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 is one of my favorites. To me, this means putting God first in my life and yielding to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. I want to be the person that God wants me to be. I want to obey Him, but I’m human. It is only because of Him that I can strive to follow the commandments of Philippians 4:4-9, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22, or Ephesians 5:1-21.

“Rejoice always” is hard for me. “Pray without ceasing” is an easy one. I talk to Him silently most of the time. Occasionally, I wonder if He wishes that I had a mute button. “In everything give thanks” is another hard one. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with asking Him why, or even weeping on His throne. Faith has taught me to trust His will. He has a reason.

I don’t recall praying about the spoon rest, but perhaps I did. I do talk to Him about my very ordinary life. I have found Him to be interested in EVERYTHING about me. He helps me remember things, find things, create things, and He gives me strength to do things when I ask Him for it. He gives me His wisdom, and His protection. God truly cares.

I have heard pastors say the opposite. They do not believe God cares about our comfort or insignificant matters. All I know is what my relationship with my Father in heaven entails. Maybe He cares because He is very important to me. I tell Him that I love Him, that I need Him. I thank Him often. Gratitude is important. So is your faith.

Daily, I strive to honor the Lord and obey Him. Sadly, I grieve His Spirit often. And yet, He forgives me as soon as I repent of it. I try to be a light for Him each day in everything that I do. My life, every part of me, belongs to Jesus. I depend on Him to guide me and to teach me. Therefore, He is all in my business. That’s a wonderful blessing.

When I started blogging, I wanted to be a witness for those searching for God. I wanted people to know that He exists, just as the witnesses in the Bible tell us that He does. For anyone wondering about Him, I urge you to seek Him while He can be found. When you do, He will respond to you in a precious way that will eliminate all doubt about His existence.

Remember, God is holy. Always be respectful. This reminder is important, because if you have not read the Bible, you do not realize that His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. Let me assure you that the One you seek is very patient, and He understands our human limitations. If you are sincere, He will respond to you.

Dear Reader, seeking God takes an effort and time on your part. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can make Him real to you. When the Creator of this universe makes Himself known to you, that will be the beginning of the most awesome relationship you will ever know. Not even death will end it.
